Frequently Asked Questions

Are these chemicals in my drinking water?
This study was not designed to determine the levels of these compounds in drinking water (although some streams sampled are used as sources of drinking water), or to determine the efficiency of various drinking-water treatment technologies. However, given that these types of compounds are being transported to streams, it is certainly possible that low levels of some compounds could be present in some drinking-water sources (in streams where water is removed fro drinking water purposes). These waters then typically undergo a variety of treatments before they reach our tap. And, although the treatment processes were not designed to remove most of these compounds, some may be removed or reduced.

The USGS Toxic Substances Hydrology Program is conducting a survey of source waters in collaboration with the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. Stay tuned to this web page for results of that study or use the contact information provided below.
