Source Characterization Study

Bacterial, viral and protozoan pathogens are generally understood to occur in fecal material from a variety of human and animal sources. However, little is known about the relative abundance of bacterial pathogens in various types of source materials and particularly the occurrence of high-priority, antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus and vancomycin-resistant enterococci. This project is examining a variety of source materials for these bacteria and for selected genes indicating acquisition and transfer of antimicrobial resistance.
