Antimicrobial Resistance in Orchards

image of apples

Select antibiotics are used directly in the production of fruit (bacterial disease in apples and related fruit). Little is known about the occurrence or abundance of pathogens on fruit, or the effects of antibiotic application to fruit on the antibiotic resistance of such pathogens. In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, twenty-seven fruit wash samples (from the Oregon Department of Agriculture) were analyzed for the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in three physiological categories. Thirty bacteria were isolated for this study and identified by 16S rRNA sequencing. These bacteria were also evaluated for their antimicrobial-resistance patterns and for the occurrence of genes indicating acquisition of resistance from other bacteria.
