Output Format

Sort Order

Results can be sorted by:

  • Author
  • Year
  • Title
  • Publication Type

Small words (the, a, …) at the beginning of the title are not used for sorting by the title of the reference.

Results Page Format

The search engine output is formatted four different ways:

  • basic web page output
  • detailed web page output
  • wrapped text output
  • plain text output

The desired output option is selected by a pulldown menu.

Basic Web Page Output

The plain web page output has the following features:

  • Designed to be viewed by any web browser
  • Echoes the user's query terms
  • For papers with an on-line version the reference is made a link so the user can view the online version

This is the default output option.

Detailed Web Page Output

The detailed web page output has the following features:

  • Designed to be viewed by any web browser
  • Echoes the user's query terms
  • For papers with an on-line version the title is linked to the online version
  • A link to the Toxic Substances Hydrology Program investigation that produced the paper or report is provided if available

Wrapped Text Output

The wrapped text output has the following features:

  • Can be viewed by web browsers
  • Designed to be saved to a text file by most web browsers
  • Does not echo the user's query terms
  • Only outputs a list of the references found by the search engine
  • Lists references in alphabetical order by author, year, title
  • The text is wrapped with a blank line between paragraphs

This output option was designed so the users save the output as a text file with their web browsers. The text file can then be imported into almost any word processing program.

Plain Text Output

The plain text output has the following features:

  • Can be viewed by web browsers
  • Designed to be saved to a text file by most web browsers
  • Does not echo the user's query terms
  • Only outputs a list of the references found by the search engine
  • Lists references in alphabetical order by author, year, title
  • Each reference is listed on a single line of text

This output option was designed so that users can import the search engine's output into word processing programs. The saved text file has line feeds or carriage returns or both only at the end of each reference. The text file can then be imported into almost any word processing program.
