Design of the Data Base (Structure and Format)

Each record in the Toxics Bibliographic Data Base has four fields--label, title, author, and year. For example, the following reference

Aiken, G.R., Capel, P.D., Furlong, E.T., Hult, M.F., and Thorn, K.A., 1991, Mechanisms controlling the transport of organic chemicals in subsurface environments, in Mallard, G.E., and Aronson, D.A., eds., U.S. Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology Program--Proceedings of the technical meeting, Monterey, Calif., March 11-15, 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 91-4034, p. 633-637.

would be split up into the following fields.

label = Bemidji, Minnesota (Crude Oil), Conference Proceedings
title = Mechanisms controlling the transport of organic chemicals in subsurface environments, in Mallard, GE, and Aronson, DA, eds., U.S. Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology Program---Proceedings of the technical meeting, Monterey, Calif., March 11-15, 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 91-4034, p. 633-637.
author = Aiken, G.R., Capel, PD, Furlong, E.T., Hult, M.F., And Thorn, K.A.
year = 1991

Note that everything after the year of publication is treated as the title. When you search in the title or author field you are searching the references as they would appear in a bibliography. All references are formatted according to U.S. Geological Survey publication style guidelines.

The topic, program investigation, and publication type menus control searches on the labels field.
